The list of winners in the IPL is now filled with 19 completed seasons, starting from the first winning title in 2008 for the Rajasthan Royals and finishing with the second straight IPL title for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2026. RCB won the final of 2026 in Ahmedabad by five wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium against Gujarat Titans. Virat Kohli notched an unbeaten 75 and emerged as Player of the Match.

IPL history in brief

Shane Warne was the captain of the Rajasthan Royals who won the first IPL season. They won the final match against Chennai Super Kings and became the first team to win the championship.

In the next season, 2009, Deccan Chargers triumphed. The Chennai Super Kings were the first team to win back-to-back IPL titles by winning in 2010 and 2011.

Kolkata Knight Riders took their first trophy in 2012 and the second in 2014.

The Mumbai Indians emerged as a big team from 2013. Between 2013-2020, they won five titles. In the same time span, Chennai Super Kings had won five titles as well.

The newer franchises also made it in as well. In Gujarat Titans' maiden IPL season, 2022, they claimed the trophy. Deccans and Sunrisers Hyderabad have one title apiece while Rajasthan Royals have none.

It was a first for Royal Challengers Bengaluru to win their first IPL title in 2025. In 2026, they successfully defended in the IPL, making them the third franchise to win consecutive IPL trophies after Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians.

Why does the IPL winners list matter?

IPL Winners List from 2008 to 2026

The final match of 2026 IPL was played at Ahmedabad on May 31, 2026. Gujarat Titans scored 155/8 for their target and RCB made 161/5 in 18 overs. RCB took a five-wicket victory, retaining the trophy.

Rajasthan Royals were the first team to win the first IPL title in 2008. They were not one of the better sides before the tournament even started, and Shane Warne constructed a well-rounded side with a good mix of young Indian and experienced foreign talents.

In the final at the DY Patil Stadium, Rajasthan Royals beat CSK by three wickets. Yusuf Pathan was a big contribution at both ends in the game and got Player of the Match Award.

He picked up three wickets on 56 deliveries, which played a big part in the Rajasthan win.

IPL 2009 Winner

Winner: Deccan Chargers

Runner-up: Royal Challengers Bangalore

Captain: Adam Gilchrist

The second season of the IPL tournament was held in South Africa. After a bad season, Deccan Chargers came through to win the championship.

They beat Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final match in Jnaneswar, Mumbai.

RCB were only able to post 138/9. Deccan Chargers hit the score and emerged victorious by six runs.

Anil Kumble bowled well for RCB, but failed to win. He was awarded the Player of the Match award.

Winner: Chennai Super Kings

Runner-up: Mumbai Indians

Captain: MS Dhoni

In 2010, CSK's first IPL championship was won.

In the final, they beat the Mumbai Indians by 22 runs in the DY Patil Stadium.

Suresh Raina had the best of the show. He had an unbeaten 57 and contributed to CSK's solid overall effort.

With this win, CSK started their long spell of success.

Runner-up: Royal Challengers Bangalore

Captain: MS Dhoni

This was the first time in the IPL history that Chennai Super Kings won consecutive championships.

The rivals RCB came into conflict with them in the last game at Chepauk, losing by 58 runs.

Murali Vijay was the star of the game. He hit 95 runs off 52 deliveries and assisted CSK to 205/5.

RCB struggled to keep up and were bowled out for 147.

IPL 2012 Winner

Winner: Kolkata Knight Riders

Runner-up: Chennai Super Kings

The Chennai Super Kings went on to build a 190/3 lead after scoring first. KKR took a good chase next.

Manvinder Bisla's 89 off 48 balls is a highly impressive effort. Jacques Kallis also made an important contribution.

With two balls to go, KKR reached the target in the final five wickets.

Mumbai Indians won their first IPL championship in 2013.

They won the final at Eden Gardens, beating CSK by 23 runs.

Kieron Pollard was the star of the show. He made his 60* from 32 deliveries and came up to the rescue for MI.

Pollard earned his Player of the Match honors.

The victory started Mumbai Indians' period of dominance.

Captain: Gautam Gambhir

In 2014, KKR's second IPL title was added to their collection.

Wriddhiman Saha gave a brilliant performance for Kings XI Punjab as they put on a big target.

Manish Pandey had a great chase for KKR and he did just that.

Pandey bowled 50 balls to score 94 runs and aided Kolkata's chase with three wickets in hand.

In 2015, Mumbai Indians won their second title.

They beat CSK by 41 runs in the last over at Eden Gardens.

Rohit Sharma, who was the top batter and led the scoring, hit 50 off 26 deliveries.

He is the first captain to win the Player of the Match in an IPL final.

Winner: Sunrisers Hyderabad

Captain: David Warner

Sunrisers Hyderabad's first IPL title was in 2016.

They played against RCB in the finals at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

David Warner and his side of the ball delivered a fine batting performance, as SRH managed 208/7.

RCB were close in the run-up but couldn't convert their close opportunity for a goal in the game.

SRH were defeated by eight runs.

Ben Cutting was the Player of the Match with his 39* and two wickets.

IPL 2017 Winner

Winner: Mumbai Indians

Runner-up: Rising Pune Supergiant

Captain: Rohit Sharma

The game was one of the closest finals in the history of IPL.

The home side of MI came up with just 129/8 in reply.

Rising Pune Supergiant were on the verge of the target but they missed it by 128/6.

Mumbai won by just one run.

Krunal Pandya, who was key in the match with both bat and ball, was named Player of the Match.

IPL 2018 Winner

Winner: Chennai Super Kings

Runner-up: Sunrisers Hyderabad

Captain: MS Dhoni

Shane Watson delivered one of the best IPL final innings ever.

It was yet another nail-biting finish with MI battling CSK in the 2019 final.

Mumbai Indians scored 149/7.

They could only manage 148/7 for CSK who required 150.

MI won by one run.

This was Mumbai's fourth IPL title.

IPL 2020 Winner

Due to the COVID-19 situation, the 2020 IPL was held in UAE.

Mumbai Indians were the top team of the season and made it to the final against Delhi Capitals.

Delhi made 156/7.

MI had eight balls left in hand and they joined the target, beating the latter by five wickets.

Trent Boult was declared Player of the Match for picking up three wickets.

Mumbai won the fifth title thanks to the victory.

In 2021, CSK made a comeback to the top.

In their last match against KKR they had a 192/3 record.

Faf du Plessis hit 86 off 59 deliveries and was the key batsman for the team.

KKR fought the battle and came out with a score of 165/9.

CSK won by 27 runs, and secured their 4th title.

IPL 2022 Winner

Winner: Gujarat Titans

Captain: Hardik Pandya

Gujarat Titans made IPL history in their first season.

The new franchise went to the final and beat Rajasthan Royals.

RR held their own to GT with a score of 130/9.

Then Hardik Pandya came in who played an important role with bat and ball.

GT went on to complete the chase with 11 balls to spare, to emerge victorious by 7 wickets.

Hardik was selected as Player of the Match.

IPL 2023 Winner

Winner: Chennai Super Kings

Runner-up: Gujarat Titans

Captain: MS Dhoni

The final was affected by rain and shortened to a 15-over chase in 2023.

Gujarat Titans scored 214/4.

CSK was given a new target of 171 in 15 overs.

Ravindra Jadeja played his last two balls spectacularly and got off to a six and a four.

CSK scored a five wicket victory.

Devon Conway was named the Player of the Match with his 47 off 25 deliveries.

With this win, CSK would win their fifth title in the IPL.

IPL 2024 Winner

Winner: Kolkata Knight Riders

The final of the 2024 season was one of the most impressive performances in the history of the IPL by KKR.

It was only in 2025 that RCB finally became the winners of an IPL trophy.

They beat the Punjab Kings in the final in Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium.

RCB scored 190/9.

Punjab Kings were on the chase but came out 184/7.

RCB won with six runs.

Krunal Pandya did a lot with the ball and also received the Player of the Match.

This was RCB's maiden championship of the IPL after 18 seasons.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru managed to defend their title in the 2026 season of the IPL.

The final took place on 31st May at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium.

Gujarat Titans went 155/8 when they were the first to bat.

Washington Sundar was the top scorer with 50 runs from 37 deliveries.

RCB then went over 156 and capped off with 161/5 in 18 overs.
